The Absolute Best Dishes We Tried this Month
Every month our tireless editors try all the hottest, newest food trends in Shanghai, just for you (tough job… we know). Shanghai’s F&B scene is always a wild ride, but we boiled things down to pick some of the absolute best of the best we got to try this month.
HEAT FRENCH ROTISSERIE & BISTRO
We really have to start with this chicken, which we may never be able to stop thinking about. The skin alone is worth the cost, slightly crispy, slightly sweet and for sure ambrosial. Enjoy juicy, tender flavors and the natural saltiness of the meat. RMB 65 gets you a ¼ bird paired with a sauce and a side.
Which side do we recommend from their 7 options: The Gratin Dauphinois without a doubt. Truly authentic French grandma style. We also recommend finishing things off with their French toast. The bread is soaked in milk and sugar before being pan fried… it is divine and a steal at RMB 30.

PHO CAFE
The venue is not the most well designed in town, nor is it the most comfortable, but their cuisine… truly worth a visit. The Vietnamese Roasted Chicken Thigh, for RMB22 worth every yi mao you’ll spend. It’s a flavorsome cold dish which tastes way better than it looks.
If you want something warm we suggest their Pho King RMB55. It’s a big bowl of noodles with different kinds of authentic Vietnamese meats. The best part: a full stomach with a low amount of calories. Last highlight of the place: the fresh coconut. After you finish the coconut water they make asecond drink with the coconut flesh. RMB 30 and you will sip it until the last drop within minutes.

BO SHANGHAI
This month we tried Bo Shanghai’s two new menus (yes we love our jobs) and this dish easily stole the show. Coquille of Sichuan in the RMB1080 set. The scallop was slightly pan-seared and paired with a gongbao ice cream. Never heard about it before? That’s probably because Bo Shanghai does whatever they want and they’re usually the only ones doing it. Add a combo of cashews and a pepper coulis. It’s so delicious it’s like eating a poem.

NAMASTE INDIA
Nothing pretentious going on over at Namate, and the simple is often the best. No msg, no food coloring, no taste enhancers, sunflower cooking and all hallal meat. We loved two dishes: The Malasa Dosa (RMB40) and the Idli (RMB30). They are both vegan Indian bread. The first one is a black lentil-based pancake stuffed with medium spicy potatoes and onion.
By the way, their cheese naan is a feast for cheese lover (RMB 30)

HOOKED
We must admit they have the best fish & chips we’ve ever tried in Shanghai. Approved by the whole team plus several British friends wesent afterwards to sneak around the kitchen. Several fish base options for this fried miracle: haddock, Icelandic cod, halibut or salmon (RMB98-128).
But wait, don’t leave yet, their deep fried chocolate bars are also to die for. It is a Mars or a Snicker which has been fried like a donut.Yes it’s bad. Yes we love it. Yes we want it again. At RMB40 you can easilyshare it.
